OAKLAWN CEMETERY
BAY TOWNSHIP, CHARLEVOIX COUNTY, MICHIGAN
(Inactive)
Oaklawn Cemetery is not active and no interments have been made since 1975. There are no records for the cemetery in Bay Township Files. All of the information herein was obtained from the tombstones and grave markers. The cemetery is located on Horton Bay North Road about 3/10th of a mile from the intersection of Horton Bay North Road and the Boyne City-Charlevoix Road, very near the Horton Bay Store.
About five acres of land in the northwest comer of Section 6 was deeded to the Township by Lynetta J. Shaw for "burial purposes." It was dated September 9. 1916, and recorded in Liber 77 on September 23, 1916. A Cemetery Plat was made and duly recorded on January 18, 1918 that shows 312 interment sites or lots.
A portion of a Warranty Deed to Bernard A. Durkee and wife includes an affidavit signed by Frances Skornia as Clerk, that "A special Election was held May 6, 1938 for the purpose to have the right to sell Township Property." This was a portion of the Oaklawn Cemetery. The Supervisor at the time of the special election was C.N. Smiih. At the time of the sale it was John Taylor. This sale was recorded on May 20. 1940.
A second sale of property was made to Lizzie Fox by the Township. It is recorded on November 8, 1940.
These sales effectively reduced the size of the Cemetery to approximately one-acre. No records have been found. The information about the burials herein was obtained from the tombstones and grave markers. Folklore in the township, as could be expected, includes mentions of unmarked burials and others who have been moved to other cemeteries.
