Frank McWain was born on May 13, 1864 in St. Clair County, Michigan. He was the son of William and Elmira Briggs McWain, and is of Scotch-Irish descent. William was born in Toronto, Ontario and he died on May 21, 1906 in Boyne City. Elmira was born on October 1, 1834 in Dunham, Quebec, Canada and she died on March 1, 1913 in Boyne City.

William and Elmira were the parents of seven children. They were: Louis (1852-?) that married Emily Lewis (1866-?); Mary Jane (abt. 1858-?) that married William J. Lewis (1843-?) (Note: Emily and William J. were the children of Edwin W. and Alvirah Clark Lewis); Lydia (abt. 1860 d. young); Franklin, the subject of this biography; Hadley (abt. 1866 – d. young); Toby (abt. 1869 - d. young); and Violetta (About 1871 - ?) that married George Madden.

Frank spent his youth in Pewamo, Michigan. He went, with his family, to Boyne City around 1880. On December 4, 1887 he married Amelia Livingstone (1869-1948). She was the daughter of Ira (1830-1904) and Eliza Filo. Livingstone. Amelia was born in Enniskillen, Ontario on November 25, 1869.

Frank and Amelia were the parents of eight children. They were: Melvin (1888-1888); Sadie Dale (1891-?) that married Gordon Daine Maurer; Opal Idessa (1883-1967) that was married five (5) times- to George Naldredt, George Harper, Maurice Sterman, Bernie Powers, and Charie Watson; Merle Frank (1895-1898); May (1898-1900); Leslie Percy (1902-1971) that was married to Evelyn Gau; Judson (1906-1988) that was married two (2) times- to Viola Colquitt and Eva Maude Watts (1910-1997) (Ed. Note: - Judson and Eva were my parents); and Keith (1908-1967) that was married two (2) times- to Caroline Yaklin and Manie ?.

Frank and Amelia were residents of Boyne City most of the years that they were raising their family. They lived at various times in Central Lake, Detroit, and Grand Rapids, Michigan. They summered in Chula Vista, a resort on Lake Charlevoix between Ironton and Advance, their cottage being built in 1904. Frank tended to try new business adventures with some frequency and over the years was a butcher, grocer, saloon owner, restaurateur, farmer, liveryman, owner of a blacksmith shop, agricultural implement dealer, real estate investor, and backer of an automatic feeding trough for pigs, that later failed.
