PERRY WHITING, OLD PIONEER, RITES HELD AT LOS ANGELES

Perry Whiting, a pioneer of this region, who later achieved fame and wealth in California died there recently according to work received by friends.

Whiting, 84, gave the land which his parents once owned to Charlevoix County as a park in 1920.

He left the family farm near Advance while still a boy to go to Grand Rapids as a collector for a gas company. Although successful in almost every line of endeavor he undertook, he was seized by wanderlust and moved westward.

After a series of enterprises in the plains states that ranged from operating meat markets, ranching and owning a hotel, he arrived in California in 1903. After working as a carpenter for a few months, he established his first building supply company that later became the Whiting Co. with branches in 29 west-coast cities. Speculating in real estate, salvage, and other investments, Whiting pyramided his enterprises into a financial giant.

Burial rites were read at Los Angeles, January 30, and interment was at Forest Lawn mausoleum.

He is survived by his widow, Marita, a daughter, Ila, a brother, Art Smith; and a sister, Mrs. Effie Arrant. Perry Whiting is also survived by several cousins in the Peninsula and East Jordan area.
